Congratulations on 10 years with Sapphire! Can you remember your first day and what stood out to you?
It was too long ago to remember clearly but, since we still do it, going around and sitting with each department to understand what they do and why whilst meeting everyone was a really great way to remove any anxieties about starting a new role and meeting new people. In my couple of weeks, I ended up playing 5 aside, having a poker night and having the first night out with the company – not something you expect from an accountant!
What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen within the business during your time here?
The sheer growth in the amount of people who are now part of Sapphire is probably the biggest change, along with the office where we are now based. It’s as if it’s an entirely different company to the one I joined a decade ago. That said and as we’ve grown, we’ve managed to keep that small company feel and still ensure that we have a good time outside of the day-to-day work!
What has kept you motivated to stay with Sapphire for 10 years?
It doesn’t feel anything like 10 years, truthfully. It’s pretty cliché but we’re so fluid and fast-paced that you never sit clock-watching. But there are some standout benefits to working at Sapphire:
- The people.
- The socials.
- The ambition of the business.
More recently, the EOT and what that means to each member of staff now certainly has some weight but I see this as an amazing extra, the three points above are what makes Sapphire the best place for me to come to each day.
Have there been any colleagues or mentors who have had a significant impact on your journey?
There are loads of people that have helped shape my career at Sapphire, every person leaves an impact in some way or another. That being said, three people immediately came to mind:
- Mark – for imparting ambition on the business and me individually, not allowing anyone to be content with standing still.
- Lee – who helped shape how I apply that which we learn during our professional exams, particularly in dealing with clients.
- Shawry – to compete with, in the early years!
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned during your time here?
Be honest, proactive and upfront about your communication – whether that be with a colleague or a client. If you promise an update, give it – good or bad. Honesty helps build relationships and clients appreciate it.
What has been your favourite memory from your time with the company?
I’ve gone on trips I never envisaged, made mates for life and had a laugh along the way. Dublin, Vegas, Miami are some highlights for sure.
What are you most excited about for the future of the business?
We’ve got ambitious goals for further growth and with it, more opportunities and roles for everyone at Sapphire!
If your 10 years at Sapphire had a theme song, what would it be?
The Adventure – Angels & Airwaves
What’s been the funniest or most memorable moment you’ve experienced at work?
I nearly snapped my neck in Lisbon. Funny to look back on if you were there, not so funny if you ask my family.
Finally, what does reaching your 10-year milestone mean to you personally?
It’s just another day to me. I’ve probably got circa 30 years of work left in me, so I’ll see you in another 10.
